Jean-Marie Baldwin: Painting & Textile
I work with paints and dyes on various surfaces from canvas to silk, using ancient and modern techniques. My experiments over the years stimulate my creativity and lead to many new results.
I’m working in oil paints with a thick, rich Impasto style. Fascinated by light and reflection and the effects that they have on color, my bold paint strokes capture the atmosphere of the moment creating an energetic dance of color and texture.
Educated in Fine and Commercial art I’ve continued studies with several noted painters. Through my various work and teaching in the art world, I’ve managed to create my own style and techniques. I accomplish the desired thick, rich Impasto style by using Teflon spatulas or bowl scrapers. Since I apply the paint very thickly, which keeps my paintings loose and spontaneous. Instead of mixing the colors on my palette, I will double or triple load the spatula and apply two or three colors at a time, mixing, blending or not as desired right on the canvas. I’ll use the smaller Teflon tools or brushes to finish up details and small areas of my paintings.
